    Exhibitionview, 2018

Belarus is a newly established state. Over the past centuries, todays territories of Belarus belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish Republic of Nobles, the Russian Empire and eventually the Soviet Union. In the 20th century the country was the scene of two world wars, a civil war and the Stalinist Great Terror. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, did Belarus become a sovereign state. Military in Minsk is ever-present to this day–patrols in public spaces, displayed on billboards or immortalised on monuments. The city´s epithet »Hero City« or the patriotism expressed in the name »The Great Patriotic War« convey a perspective on history to be taken.
